Multiples

For this project I started by taking some ready made architectural drawings and use them as a starting off point. The point of the project was to create something using various different medias e.g. painting, drawing, photography, stitching  etc. to begin with I started to cut the drawings up, stick them back together and incorporate paint. I also used masking tape again like in my first project.

Mixed media on paper.

I still had some of my drawings left over so my tutor suggested that I photocopy them, enlarging smaller areas of the drawings and turning them into negatives. I did this and decided to work on the photocopies again with paint but also other media like drawing and even incorporating wax onto the surface of the paper which produced some interesting marks.

These images reminded me of the work of Piet Mondrian and the Stijl art movement mixed together with constructivism and the drawings by Rodchenko.

For the last part of this project I decided to take my photocopies and photocopy them again but this time onto acetate. I took these acetates and projected them against the wall space in my part of the studio. I got the idea from my previous drawing and light project. Once I projected these shadows against the wall I took various photographs.

I really like how these photographs turned out. They remind me of a sort of 3D geometric Franz Kline painting because of the colour of the wall and the fact that the images are monochrome. This isn't just coincidental too, Kline used this process of projecting his own images to discover his now recognised style. Franz Kline is an artist who has had a profound effect on some of my most recent work.

Drawing and Light

For this project I started by wrapping an object in various clear plastic materials and then unwrapping the object and projecting it's shadow against the wall. I chose a mechanical whisk for my object because I thought it would produce an interesting shadow. When I was happy with my projected image I started to draw it. The idea of the project was to recreate the tonal layers of the image and it's structure through various drawing methods.

To begin with I struggled and became frustrated with my drawing because I could not capture the textural quality of the crumpled up plastic of the object and shadow. Eventually I finally thought I'd managed to find a way of expressing it through using geometric pencil lines and layering them over and over the tonal quality of the smeared charcoal. In the end I was happy with the overall composition.

My idea for using geometric lines had come from love of Constructivism and the drawings of Alexander Rodchenko.

I also produced some prints inspired by the same artist.

Stochastic Painting

Stochastic painting is a process of were the painter will not have a preconceived idea of how the finished image will turn out. The word Stochastic derives from a Greek word for 'target', indicating something random in character.

I quite like this way of working. I find there is something exciting about not knowing how my work will look when I've finished with it, going in blind and working with the composition until I am happy.

To start with I've used acrylic paint and painted various layers of colour all over the canvas but between layers I've covered up certain areas of the painting before painting the next layer. I've repeatwed this process using a differant colour each time but using colours that compliment each other. The end result has become something that is visually abstract.

Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas

For this project I layered paint and strips of masking tape to a canvas over and over again, covering and revealing marks and forms. I repeated this process until I was happy with the overall composition. When I applied the paint I tried to use a palette of colour that would work well through practise as shown in my sketchbook work below. I also used the left over masking tape and paint to create smaller compositions, again in sketchbook work.

I've started to look at artists than use similar techniques and Barnett Newman has stud out as being a big influence on this my current work. Below is a link to a video that shows his method of working.
